Over the last few weeks we have seen a number of drivers earn guaranteed starting positions for their car owners as a host of qualifying events were held for the 6 th Annual John Blewett III Memorial North-South Shootout™.

Charlie Schultz of Lorain, OH, and Chris Perley of Rowley, MA, were the first to grab their spots on the starting grid for the East-West Supermodified Shootout ™ by virtue of their victories at Sandusky Speedway on July 25 & 26 during Hy-Miler weekend. Schultz scored the victory in the ISMA Hy-Miler 40 on Friday night to earn in his first-ever ISMA feature win and the guaranteed starting spot. Perley bested a stellar field on hand for the running of the 31st annual Hy-Miler Nationals on Saturday night to take down his third consecutive Hy-Miler Nationals win and a spot in the Shootout for Vic Miller.

In some cultures, the date 8/8/08 was believed to be a day of prosperity. It turned out to be a lucky one for two teams in the racing community. On Friday night, Doug Coby of Milford, CT, earned his car owner Glenn Johnson a guaranteed starting spot in the SK-Type Modified portion of the North-South Shootout™ with a victory at Stafford Motor Speedway. Later that night, Jimmy Blewett also earned a berth in the 6 th Annual John Blewett III Memorial North-South Shootout™ when he won the New England Dodge Dealers 150 for the Whelen Modified Tour.

On Saturday, August 9th, three drivers took advantage of North-South Shootout qualifiers to earn guaranteed starting spots for their car owners. Tyler Chadwick of Ledyard, CT, won the qualifying event for the SK-Type Modifieds at the Waterford Speedbowl. Further north, Henry Stampfl of Plainville, MA, became the guaranteed starter at All-Star Speedway in Epping, NH. Stampfl was the first SK-Type Modified to cross the line; finishing third behind Bobby Gahan and Bruce Batchelder. Way to the West, at Madera Speedway in Merced, CA, the Superm odified Racing Association (SMRA) competed in their first of two East-West Supermodified Shootout ™ qualifiers. Bryan Warf, of Meridian, ID, came home victorious to earn the coveted starting spot.

Ronnie Silk of Norwalk, CT, joined Jimmy Blewett as the second qualifier for the Modified portion of the North-South Shootout™ when he won the Whelen Modified Tour event at Thompson Speedway on Thursday, August 14 th . Silk drove an impressive race to score the victory on an emotional night that commemorated the loss of the race's namesake, John Blewett III. The victory will ensure Silk's car owners Roger and Sandra Hill, who have fielded cars for all of the NSS events to date, a guaranteed starting spot in the event.

Back in May, Brian King became the very first winner of a North-South Shootout ™ qualifying spot when he took top honors in the ASA Southern Modified Race Tour at Ace Speedway.
